Chiropractic is the science of relating the nervous system to the daily functional health and well-being of the body. Chiropractic teaches that we have an innate intelligence in the body that is able to maintain, regenerate and rebuild a state of good health. It has survival mechanisms that allow our bodies to adapt and change to keep us healthy and well. The chiropractor’s goal is to keep your body healthy by keeping your spine and nervous system healthy.

Posture is a good tool to indicate the overall health of a spine. It has been commonly referred to as “The window to the spine and mirror to the function of the nervous system.” Our spine is flexible, structurally strong and reflects the health of our body. Not only does the spine support the body and all of the organs, it also supports and protects the spinal cord and all of its nerve branches, which are critical for communication between the brain and the body. This nerve communication allows us to walk, talk and breathe.

Poor posture can have negative effects on your health. For example, poor posture compromises the movements of the rib cage and prevents the lungs from functioning at maximum efficiency. This reduces the oxygen entering the tissues and the removal of carbon dioxide waste. Poor posture also restricts other vital organs of the body and creates additional stress.

The human body is subject to constant change. It needs balance and coordinated function of the nervous system and the body. For this reason, good posture is essential for the body to function efficiently and develop properly. Our bodies must constantly adapt to many stresses (including gravity) to maintain balance, and poor posture is a common result. If poor posture is not corrected, it can affect a person’s health and well-being. Poor posture contributes to shallow breathing; a constricted chest cavity, faulty digestion, poor elimination, and decreased function of many internal organs.
